Listen to Ariana Grande on iHeartRadio

Ariana Grande opens up about her belief in demons, kissing Mac Miller, crazy sex toy rumors, and her thoughts on Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber in a new cover interview with Complex.

“I’m a big nerd,” says the singer. “I love Lord of the Rings. I love Harry Potter. I love scary movies. I love dinosaurs, science, aliens, ghosts.”

Asked whether she has ever seen an extraterrestrial, Grande responds, “Not an alien, but I’ve had a ghost/demon experience.”

It happened recently when she tried to visit Stull Cemetery in Kansas, which is “known as one of the seven gates to hell on Earth.”

“I felt this sick, overwhelming feeling of negativity over the whole car and we smelled sulfur, which is the sign of a demon, and there was a fly in the car randomly, which is another sign of a demon,” recalls Grande. “I was like, ‘This is scary, let’s leave.’ I rolled down the window before we left and said, ‘We apologize. We didn’t mean to disrupt your peace.’”

She adds, “Then I took a picture and there are three super distinct faces in the picture — they’re faces of textbook demons.”

But Grande deleted the picture when “weird things started happening” to her.

Like what?

“I was going to sleep about two weeks ago. I had just gotten off the phone and as soon as I closed my eyes I heard this really loud rumble right by my head,” she tells the magazine. “When I opened my eyes it stopped immediately, but when I closed my eyes it started again with whispers.”

Grande continues, “Every time I closed my eyes I started seeing these really disturbing images with, like, red shapes. Then I opened my eyes and got back on the phone and was like, ‘I’m really scared and I don’t want to go to bed tonight.’ And then I scooched over to the left side of my bed, because that’s where the best service is in my room, and there was this massive black matter. I don’t know what it was.”

“It was like a cloud of something black right next to me. I started crying,” says the performer. “I was on the phone like, ‘What do I do, what do I do?’ and they said, ‘Tell it to eff off.’ I thought, I’m not going to do that. It’s going to upset it, so I’m just going to chill and not feed into it because all it wants is fear. It feeds on fear. I watched it move to the front of my bed and then I fell asleep on the phone. I woke up and it was gone.”

On a less demonic topic, Grande says of kissing her friend Mac Miller in “The Way” music video, “It wasn’t bad if you like cigarettes and whiskey. It’s certainly a distinct taste.”

Asked whether she’s experienced real love, she replies, “I think so. Love comes in many different forms. You can love somebody and not be in love with them. They can break your heart and you can cry over it but still not be in love with them. Love is a really peculiar thing. I think as far as being in love, I’ve experienced it.”

Grande recently used Twitter to confirm her relationship with Nathan Sykes, and says she’s not afraid of being upfront on social media.

“Everybody’s got something to say but I’d rather be the person who’s honest than the person who’s like, ‘Oh that’s personal, I’m not going to tell you.’ I’ve always had an open, honest relationship with my fans,” she explains.

As for the “most ridiculous” thing to happen to Grande on social media, she recalls, “I took a selfie and everybody was like ‘There’s a big black dildo on the floor.’”

“I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? That’s a microphone for my looping machine because I’m a singer,’” she says. “People have too much damn time on their hands and just need Jesus if you ask me.”

Grande says that she doesn’t see herself “ever becoming a sex symbol,” but defends another performer making headlines with her racy choices.

“Miley looks like she is having the time of her life, and I think anybody who’s giving her a hard time is wishing deep down they were having as much fun as she is right now,” she says. “People are being so cruel. I think that’s bullying, and she should do whatever the hell she wants. Everybody needs to have more fun. If it’s not your taste, don’t look at it. I get so hyped up about the Miley thing because I think she’s cool.”

She’s also friendly with Justin Bieber.

“We never talk or see each other, but he’s really nice and whenever we are in the same building he’s friendly and we play music for each other,” says Grande, who describes The Biebs as not flirty and “super respectful of my situation.”

What scares Grande?

“I’m terrified of looking straight into the camera,” she says. “I see people on the other side of the lens and the whole judgmental world of pop culture waiting with their pitchforks and torches.”
