(Medina) - Medina firefighters responded to the high school Tuesday morning for a report of smoke coming from the Performing Arts Center.

Medina High School Communications Director Jeanne Hart says maintenance employees noticed smoke in the scene shop area and called firefighters around 7:20am. There were few employees and students in the building at the time, but everyone was evacuated. No one was hurt.

Medina Police say 19-year-old Davon Phillips of Medina was arrested and charged with Aggravated Arson, a felony of the first degree.

Police say Phillips is a June graduate of Medina High School and was employed at the time of the fire as a custodial worker by the school.

“This was great team work from fire fighters, investigators and school officials”, said Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell. “Our detectives got on it quick and didn’t stop until they had the answers. I’m proud of them all.”

Investigators report the fire was contained to a room in the rear stage area that was used to build sets for productions at the Performing Arts Center and contained a supply of wooden building materials.

Phillips is in the Medina County Jail pending a bond hearing before Judge Dale Chase of the Medina Municipal Court.

The fire did not affect summer classes. The Medina County Arson Task Force also assisted in the investigation along with the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office.
