Michelle Obama Reveals How She Became A 'Cool' Mom For Malia's Prom Night

Michelle Obama's not a regular mom, she's a "cool" mom ā€” when her daughters ask her to be.

In the former first lady's new memoir, Becomingout now, Michelle details her oldest daughter Malia's prom night, recalling how she and her husband, and then-President of the United States Barack Obama, made an "exception" for the then-17-year-old to ride in a car without Secret Service.

"On the appointed evening, her date arrived in his car," she wrote of the Spring 2015 night (per People), "clearing security at the southeast gate of the White House, following the path up and around the South Lawn by which heads of state and other visiting dignitaries normally arrived, and then gamely ā€” bravely ā€” walking into the Dip Room dressed in a black suit."

It was then that Malia asked her parents to "Just be cool please, okay?" Michelle recalled before detailing how she and Barack put on their best "cool" parent act. "Her embarrassment [had] already [begun] to smolder as we rode the elevator downstairs... I was barefoot, and Barack was in flip-flops. Malia wore a long black skirt and an elegant bare-shouldered top. She looked beautiful and about twenty-three years old."

"Barack and I shook the young manā€™s hand, snapped a few pictures, and gave our daughter a hug before sending them on their way," she continued. "We took what was perhaps unfair comfort in the knowledge that Maliaā€™s security detail would basically ride the boyā€™s bumper all the way to the restaurant where they were going for dinner before the dance and would remain on quiet duty throughout the night." #FirstFamilyPrivileges

In the book, Michelle revealed that Malia "still laughs" about the awkward encounter, calling it "a bit excruciating." However, the mom-of-two said she's still proud of the coolness she and her husband were able to exude.
