Halsey is speaking out about her experience as a woman of color.
The 25-year-old singer has been using her voice and her celebrity to show support to the black community amid the civil unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd. In the time that’s transpired since the tragedy, Halsey has been active at a number of Black Lives Matter protests demanding justice for Floyd’s murder.
However, despite advocating for the injustices against her community, the “Nightmare” singer’s racial identity recently became a topic of controversy when a fan accused her of disowning her “black side.”
“Notice how @Halsey never claims her black side, but she ‘supports.’ Stop being ignorant. She’s never claimed her Black side,” the user wrote in a since-deleted tweet, per JustJared. “This is why I will NEVER support her. On her post she says ‘let black ppl speak,’ not ‘let our ppl speak.’ Nah, f—k her.”
(FYI: Halsey is biracial. Her mother is white, her father is black.)
Halsey took to Twitter to address the claim and why she doesn’t use “we” when regarding the Black community.
“Im white passing. it’s not my place to say ‘we.’ it’s my place to help,” she tweeted. “I am in pain for my family, but nobody is gonna kill me based on my skin color. I’ve always been proud of who I am but it’d be an absolute disservice to say ‘we’ when I’m not susceptible to the same violence.”
This isn't the only hit Halsey has taken for getting involved in the ongoing George Floyd protests. She was actually shot at and gassed during a demonstration in Los Angeles over the weekend. However, this didn’t deter her from standing up for her community and she went on to expose just how cruelly police officers have been treating peaceful protesters.
