Cardi B Says It Took A Year For Her To Reach Out To Megan Thee Stallion

In honor of International Women's Day on Monday (March 8), Cardi B sat down with iHeartRadio for its SeeHer Hear Her: Celebrating Women in Music broadcast.

While discussing the topic of women supporting women, the 26-year-old rapper opened up about her friendship with fellow lyricist, and "WAP" collaborator, Megan Thee Stallion.

"Megan came out and for like a whole year I never interacted with her because I was too shy," Cardi admitted, adding that she feels like a lot of artists question if/when they should reach out to a fellow artist. "It's all about breaking the ice. Always having a conversation and catching them at the right time," Cardi noted before sharing that when she finally decided to set up a meeting with Megan, it sparked a beautiful friendship.

"We linked up and she's just a good vibe," the "UP" rapper shared. "I always want to see her win. I think she feels the same way about me too. Anytime I see her doing something good, I just get so happy."

Cardi added that she's all about female empowerment, especially when it comes to female musicians supporting one another. "If you support me, [I'm] going to always support you," she said. "If you're kind to me, I'm going to show you the utmost respect. I will always show you love."

She also shared that her support for women goes beyond the music industry, noting that she loves to uplift and encourage her female fans as often as she can. "I support women by letting them know they're that girl," Cardi said. "I see comments from girls saying they like my music and then I look at their profiles and they look good and I tell them, 'you like my music? I like your face!'"

Elsewhere in the SeeHer Hear Her: Celebrating Women in Music broadcast, Cardi spoke about what inspired her to become the woman she is today.

"I've always been loud. I've always had this fire. [...] It was always my dream to become an artist," she said. "I saw how hard my mom struggled. As I got older, I was like 'I don't want to go through what my mom went through.' That was my inspiration."

The Bronx native went on to discuss how a turning point in her life came when her mom kicked her out, forcing her to grow up sooner than she planned. "When I was 17 turning 18, I became real rebellious. I didn't want to follow my mother's rules anymore," she recalled. "One day she kicked me out because it just became too much."

Cardi then explained that her dream to become a successful artist was put on hold while she navigated the real world as a teen. As she explained, her main goal shifted to simply surviving and making it to another day. Eventually, though, Cardi began working as an exotic dancer, which relit the fire inside of her to become successful. In fact, she shared it was the women she worked with at the strip club that inspired her to fight for her dreams.

"They used to put in my head, 'You gotta see the bigger picture,'" Cardi said. "They grew me to be more aggressive. [And told me] 'You gotta fight for your sh*t.'"
