Last Wednesday, a German Shepherd that had been trapped for three to four hours in a creek in Leavenworth County, Kansas, was rescued by bystanders and emergency crews. Destiny Mesias and her boyfriend, Kevin Pauly, heard the dog crying from the woods and found it stuck in the water between steep, slick banks. Pauly climbed down, secured a ratchet strap around the dog and held its head above water as it repeatedly lost consciousness while they waited for help.
Crews from Leavenworth County Fire District 2 used ropes to navigate the 15-foot bank and pull the exhausted dog to safety. Assistant Chief Dylan Ritter says the team was able to get a rope around the dog and remove it from the creek. After being rescued, the dog was taken to Riverview Rescue for care.
The German Shepherd was later reunited with its owner, who says the pup had been missing for two days. Levi Monahan, director of Riverview Rescue, says both the owner and the dog were excited to be reunited.
