The Skinny On How Often Married Couples Actually Have Sex

When it comes to being married, one of the more common “jokes” that goes around concerns sex…and the lack of it. It’ll go something like, “Sex?! I’m married…I don’t have sex anymore.” Usually, that’s followed by uncomfortable laughter with an underlying hope that the other married people are also laughing because they’re having the same experience. Over the last five years, there’ve been a few different studies released on the topic.

  • On the high end, married couples report having sex and average of 56 times in a year. On the low end, that average comes in at 51 or 52 times a year.
  • Either way, you’re looking at around the married folks getting down around once a week…except for around the holidays, when all the coats are on the bed (thank you George Carlin).
  • From there, some might ask what the “right” number of times a married couple should have sex is. The answer doesn’t exist. A 2015 study found that as long as both people are “happy” with the relationship, a “right” number of bone-dance sessions isn’t necessary.

Though “frequent sex is often associated with happiness,” it’s more important that communication and an intimate connection are being maintained. If that includes sex, that’s even better.
