A 95-year-old South Carolina crossing guard is coming out of retirement to help the students. Estella Williams made headlines last year as the oldest serving school crossing guard in the state of South Carolina. The then 94-year-old had been helping to keep the students at Westside High School in Anderson safe for more than two decades and at the end of the year, she decided it was finally time to retire.
Well, that didn’t last long. As the beginning of the school year approached, Williams, now 95, got a call from the Anderson School District Five. They were in need of crossing guards, so the twice-retired nonagenarian donned her hi-vis safety vest once again to help the students stay safe.
Williams can’t bear the thought of leaving the students without a crossing guard, wants to make sure they’re safe, and the job gives her something to do. “I feel good…I just love it,” she says. “I just don’t like to sit around, I like to stay busy.” And the students of Anderson, South Carolina, are lucky to have her.
