The removal of “legacy” blue checkmarks occurred on Thursday, meaning celebs no longer got to have a checkmark on the site just because they were famous. But now it appears that many celebrities have their blue checkmarks back! As one Twitter user noted, the “purge” that forced people to pay for a blue checkmark if they wanted to keep it netted an extra 28 Twitter Blue subscribers that day.
At first Elon Musk had said that he was “personally” paying for a few accounts (Lebron James, for example) that he deemed notable or liked. Now more and more celebrities are saying they have the checkmark again, are not paying for the service, and did not confirm their phone number as needed. That includes Charlie Sheen and Steve Martin.
Twitter users are now digging into the change and it appears that accounts with over a million followers get the blue check for free. Some celebrities are apparently trying to get rid of the check now, and keep changing their names so it disappears! Twitter keeps adding back the checkmarks, though, apparently.
