No one likes being broken up with or having to break up with someone else, that’s why so many people do everything they can do to avoid the difficult conversation of ending a romance. As a result, there’s a lot of ghosting and quietly quitting a relationship, and now there’s another breakup trend to add to the list: “delicate dumping.”

According to relationship expert Emma Hathorn, delicate dumping is kind of a lazier version of quietly quitting on a relationship. It’s when the person is still technically committed, but they stop putting any time, effort and energy into the relationship, hoping the person they’re dating will just dump them instead. “It’s the cowardly approach to ending a relationship, slowly retreating to avoid difficult conversations, or even ghosting,” Hathorn explains.

It’s the easy way out and is used by those who can’t handle confrontation or want to end things without looking like the bad person, but it’s not the kindest way, this expert says, adding that it’s “childish.” Hathorn says the warning signs you’re being delicately dumped include:

  • You notice a change in the way your partner treats you and they start acting differently toward you.
  • They stop committing to future plans with you.
  • Your partner seems flakier than usual or you have a sense that something just feels off.
  • If you feel like you’re being delicately dumped, this relationship expert advises being direct and having a conversation with your partner about how their behavior is making you feel.
