A man in Turkey was chasing chickens through his basement during a renovation and ended up making a huge discovery. In an attempt to “recapture his escaping poultry,” the unnamed man decided to knock down a wall in his basement. Behind that way, he found a “dark tunnel” that led to “the ancient city of Elengubu,” or Derinkuyu, as its known today. The 2,000-year-old city was burrowed 280 feet underground and was once home to roughly 20K people. The actual re-discovery of the city happened in 1963, but now the underground city is open to guided tours.
