Life in plastic may really be fantastic. The North American box office had the best weekend since 2019’s opening weekend for “Avengers: Endgame.” This big weekend is all due to the hype from “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer," with many movie-goers deciding to see both movies as they participate in the “Barbenheimer” craze.
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was at the top of the box office, with a $155 million debut in North America (and $337 million globally). This debut broke the record for biggest opening by a female director (previously held by Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” from 2019).
In second place was “Oppenheimer,” opening with $80.5 million. This is the best debut for a Christopher Nolan movie ever, not including his “Batman” movies. Rounding out the top five we’ve got “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One” in third place with $19.5 million, “Sound of Freedom” in fourth place with $19 million, and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in fifth place with $6.7 million in sales this weekend.
Here are the top five movies at the North American box office this weekend:
- "Barbie" - $155 million
- "Oppenheimer" - $80.5 million
- "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One" - $19.5 million
- "Sound of Freedom" - $19 million
