After backlash from the community, the city of Seattle has rethought its plan to add a children’s playground to a nude beach. Denny Blaine Park is a well-known nude beach that sits on the shore of Lake Washington and a “safe space” for the local LGBTQ+ community. Under state law, nudity isn’t illegal…unless that nudity “crosses over into something obscene.” The concern came when it was asked who would make the call as to what is considered “obscene,” and could the playground then be “weaponized” against the nudist community “when families started showing up with their kids.” Seattle is now looking for an alternative, and more suitable, location for the park.
