At the University of Iowa, “Pokémon Go” is being used to teach math to students. The course is called Pokemath, and instructor Kitrick Fynaardt says it’s “a great gateway to exploring the world of math.” In the game, Fynaardt says there’s “an element of chance” with “defense stats, attack stats, and hit points.” With those, calculations can be performed, and students can learn the work that needs to be done to “find out the stats and see how they interact.” Some students say they’d been playing the game for years and had never realized the math angle, which has, in turn, expanded their interest in the subject.
