Barbara Millicent Roberts - better known as Barbie - is turning 65 on March 9th and to celebrate her special birthday, Mattel is releasing a new Barbie doll. She may look a little familiar because she was inspired by the very first Barbie doll that came out in 1959.
The special 65th anniversary Barbie wears a glamorous black-and-white ball gown that’s a nod to the bathing suit in the same pattern worn by the original doll. The new doll’s cat-eye sunglasses are a retro style like the ones Barbie wore back then, too. The modern Barbie also wears blue sapphire earrings, the gemstone for a 65th wedding anniversary, as well as sapphire blue eye makeup and her sunglasses even have a blue tint to keep the theme going.
- This limited-edition Barbie will be available starting March 9th for $60.
But this isn’t the only new Barbie doll coming out this month. In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8th, Mattel is adding more dolls to their Role Models line. These dolls are based on real-life singers and actresses from countries around the world. But you won’t be able to buy one because only a one-of-a-kind Barbie was made for each of the women honored.
- This year’s Role Model Barbies include Viola Davis, Shania Twain, Helen Mirren and Kylie Minogue, as well as Lila Avilés, a Mexican director, producer, and screenwriter; Maira Gomez, a Brazilian content creator; Nicole Fujita, a Japanese model; and Enissa Amani, a German comedian.
