Americans take their summer seriously and want to get the most out of the season and they have some ideas about how to do it. According to a new survey, 74% of Americans believe summer isn’t summer without some key experiences. These include spending time with loved ones (44%), having outdoor BBQs (43%), warmer weather (37%) and swimming (31%).

The poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults also reveals:

  • The “perfect summer” must include 14 days with friends and family, watching eight sunrises and 11 sunsets.
  • The top three things that can break the season are too much heat during the dog days of summer (63%), being sick (61%) or getting hurt (49%).
  • But spending time with loved ones (65%), getting away from home (55%) and just being near the water (49%) are the top ways to make the summer.
  • About half (49%) of respondents spend more time with their loved ones during the summer than they do the rest of the year.
  • Soaking up the summer sun means people go through an average of two bottles of sunscreen, but they still expect to get one sunburn.
  • People plan to take a dip in the water 11 times over the summer, in a pool (64%), the ocean (36%) or a lake (29%).
  • Beyond swimming, people expect to get in the water an average of seven days by boating (27%), tubing (27%) or kayaking (8%).
  • Fishing (32%), sunset cruises (25%) and dock-and-dining (17%) are also popular waterside activities for summer.
  • Overall, 39% of those surveyed prefer being on the water than in it (30%).
  • When it comes to summer eats, Americans plan to have 11 hot dogs and 13 burgers, as well as 11 scoops of ice cream over the season.
