It’s no surprise that Americans love pizza, so much so that in 2023, we ate 29,003 tons of it. While everyone has their preferences about who makes the best pies and what they like on their slices, new research reveals the most popular ways we enjoy pizza.

According to a new survey from Black + Decker:

  • We eat pizza frequently, with 75% of people saying they have it a few times a month or more.
  • Friday is the day 72% of folks typically eat pizza.
  • For seven in 10, the perfect pairing is enjoying a slice while watching a movie or TV show.
  • When it comes to styles of pizza, Classic New York is the top choice for 29%, and Deep Dish is a close second with 24%. Neapolitan style gets the least love with just 2.5%.
  • Toppings can make or break a pizza, and pepperoni is the most popular (67%). Sausage is second (44%), followed by bacon (39%), mushrooms (32%) and onions (26%).
  • The least popular topping is anchovies (1%), then arugula (2.5%), eggplant (3%), shrimp (3.5%) and pickles (4%).
  • Favorite dipping sauces for pizza are garlic butter and ranch, tied with 37% each, while 16% of respondents don’t like to dip their pizza in anything.
  • The most common way to eat a slice is holding it by the crust (51%) and the least common way is folding it in half horizontally, mid-crust to point, which only 9% do.
  • When it comes to grease, 66.5% dab theirs off occasionally, rarely or never, and only 16.5% dab their grease frequently.
