Are you happily coupled up and dishing out unsolicited dating advice to your “chronically single” friends? It seems a lot of folks are, so much so that single people are going viral on TikTok for sharing the most unhelpful dating tips they get from their well-meaning friends in relationships.
They’re calling themselves “chronically single” in this trend that brings them together to sympathize with each other over the worst dating advice they’ve gotten.
- In one of the videos, which has 4.6-million views, Taylor Vance reveals the five things she’s tired of hearing as a “chronically single 25-year-old.” She captions it “My new brand is being publicly single on the Internet,” and shares that at the top of her list is “It’ll happen when you least expect it.” “Will it?” Taylor asks. “Quite some time actually I haven’t expected it, and it still hasn’t happened.”
- Her video inspired many other TikTokers to share the less than helpful love life advice they’ve gotten from friends, including a video from Noah Pilato that outlines the “Top five most annoying things I get told as a chronically single 28-year-old.” His number one? “You have to love yourself before you can love anybody else.” He’s also really tired of hearing, “You just have to put yourself out there.”
So, while you may want to help your single friends find someone or feel better about struggling to find someone, don’t assume being single is a problem that needs to be solved. Instead of your tips and platitudes, they may just want you to listen and show empathy. Dating is hard and your “chronically single” friends are getting fed up, so only give advice if they ask.
