Lots of people have unexpected food combinations that they love and sometimes they go viral on social media, like watermelon with mustard or pickles and peanut butter. The latest trend is a drink made of a combo that sounds bizarre, but those who’ve tried it are surprised how much they like it. We’re talking about gatorwine, which, as you probably guessed, is made with Gatorade and wine.
But it can’t be just any old rosé or chardonnay, it has to be equal parts cheap red wine - defined as a bottle less than $12 - and the Gatorade must be the light blue Glacier Freeze flavor. So what does this weird mix actually taste like? “It’s not like anything I’ve ever tasted, ever,” says cook and YouTube star Andrew Rea, better known by the handle Binging with Babish. He compares it to sangria and admits that he’d rather drink gatorwine than Barefoot or Yellowtail brand wine and adds, “In a very disgusting, perverse way, I like it.”
Rea had it served to him in a chilled glass, but he suggests it might be better on the rocks, although that didn’t stop him from having at least two refills when sampling it for the first time. Many people on social media have been bravely trying gatorwine and a lot of them like it much more than they expected to.
- “I tried gatorwine yesterday. I was ready to hate it. I made more today. You win,” commented mattyj5751 on YouTube.
- “It’s kind of calming down the wine, for people who don’t drink wine,” @wendellion shares on Instagram.
- “Oh no. Oh no! It’s good,” surprised TikToker @wanderingmallory writes.
