A 25-year-old Indiana woman won a $500-thousand jackpot after receiving a Michigan Lottery scratch-off ticket during her family’s white elephant gift exchange on Christmas, which also happens to be her birthday. The $5 Detroit Lions Instant Game ticket was initially won by Emily Hickox’s father in the exchange, but they later traded her flashlight gift for the ticket.
On Christmas Day, Hickox scratched off the ticket, which her cousin had purchased, and initially believed she’d won $50-thousand. To confirm her win, she downloaded the Michigan Lottery app and scanned her ticket. She was stunned to discover she had actually won the game’s top prize of $500-thousand.
Hickox plans to use her winnings to buy a new car, invest, and share the money with her family, including her dad and cousin who contributed to her unexpected windfall. Reflecting on her win, she expressed gratitude and excitement over the life-changing surprise.
