You may have seen the picture of the “world’s loneliest house” floating around the internet in memes for a while, but now we know why it exists. The house sits on a hillside on an island off the coast of Iceland, and while it’s in a beautiful setting, it has no running water, electricity, or internet connection.
While there have been a lot of theories about the house, it’s actually a lodge set up by a puffin hunting club. Hunting the endangered birds isn’t illegal in Iceland, so the hunters built the lodge in 1953 to have somewhere to sleep while they were hunting.
