We know first impressions are important, so many of us do everything we can to maximize our natural beauty. But we may be working harder than we have to. These science-backed techniques can up attractiveness and have you turning heads with ease.

  • Go with a “no makeup, makeup” look Research reveals that women may mistakenly think they need more makeup than necessary to meet the “perceived social standards of attractiveness.” But all those cosmetics can actually make us look less attractive and artificial, so less really is more here. A “no makeup, makeup” look that enhances natural features subtly may be the way to go instead.
  • Don’t play too hard to get - Playing games and sending mixed signals can be confusing to potential partners. According to one study, when people can easily understand someone’s emotions, they tend to feel more attracted to them.
  • Keep flirtations casual and direct - Another study compared different types of pickup lines women used to see which men found most attractive and interesting. They preferred direct lines like, “Want to have a drink together?” and “Can I have your number?” over vague comments like, “I always see you here, you must be the bar’s best customer!” and “Can you recommend a good drink?”
  • Flash your smile - A genuine smile can make you appear more likable and attractive to others, with one study suggesting that sharing your smile signals openness, friendliness and genuine interest in engaging with others.
