Women in this country still aren’t paid as much as men, they earn just 83% of men’s weekly pay, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But it turns out, women are ahead of men in one area of building wealth - homeownership. A new study from LendingTree finds that single women own 2.7-million more homes than single men in the U.S.

The research finds that about 13% of women hold the titles to their homes, compared to 10% of men. LendingTree’s analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data reveals that single women who live alone are more likely than single men who live alone to own a home in 47 of 50 states.

According to the study:

  • In the U.S. single women own 10.95-million homes, while single men own 8.24-million.
  • Delaware is the state with the highest share of homes owned by single women, as 15.34% of owner-occupied homes in the state are owned by single women. That’s 5.89% more than the share of homes owned by men in the state.
  • After Delaware, Louisiana and Mississippi have the highest rates of single-women homeownership.
  • The homeownership rate of single men is highest in New Mexico, North Dakota and Alaska.
  • Overall, American women still have lower net worth than men. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis reports that the median wealth of women-headed households is 45% lower than those headed by men.
