Do you prefer sweet over salty, or are you more of a heat-seeker who can’t get enough spicy food? It turns out, your preferences for snacks can reveal insights into your personality. Scientific studies have done the research to find the personality traits associated with different snacks.

  • People who crave salt - Fans of salty foods like pretzels and potato chips may be impulsive types who crave new experiences. A study finds these “novelty seekers” also tend to take risks and lose their temper, too.
  • Spice fiends and meat lovers - Those who enjoy meaty snacks and love spicy foods are often thrill-seekers, according to one Japanese study. They’re also fun to be around and are always up for a new adventure.
  • Those with a sweet tooth - Research shows that if you choose sugary snacks over salty ones, you may be insecure and look for approval from others in their social group.
  • Chocolate lovers - People who crave chocolate, as well as coffee and tea, tend to be adventurous “sensation seeking” types.
  • People who prefer fruit - Those who reach for fruit or veggies instead of processed or fast food are often more “open” to new experiences, one study finds. They’re also more likely to be creative and insightful.
  • Fans of jerky or other unusual snacks - Some people always order the “weird” item on the menu and research shows those folks who love novelty tend to be more health-focused than average. Lucky for them, they’re also more likely to have a lower body-mass index.
  • If you like very dark chocolate or sprouts - A study from Austria’s Innsbruck University finds a connection between a preference for bitter snacks like dark chocolate, cranberries or coffee and certain negative personality traits. The research suggests fans of these bitter flavors are more likely to show narcissistic, manipulative tendencies.
