Mecox Bay in Southampton, which is surrounded by luxurious mansions, has been identified as one of the most fecal-contaminated beaches in the US. The Surfrider Foundation, which conducts the testing, expressed major concerns about the consistently high bacteria levels, noting the beach's popularity for all kinds of recreational activities.
Local officials say the poo pollution is due to outdated septic systems and cesspools, exacerbated by heavy rain and runoff. Efforts are underway to improve septic systems and manage runoff, with ongoing advocacy to deal with this health hazard.
