First dates are tricky. You’re trying to put your best foot forward and make a great first impression. You also don’t want to come off as cheap…or look like you’re trying to break the bank and overwhelm them. How much you should spend on a first date is a topic of great debate.

As with everything worth doing in this world, there are pros and cons that come along with spending big on a first date.

  • You can be “budget conscious” without looking like a cheap ass.” Going out for coffee and taking a walk can be a strong play and help you get to know someone. Spending the same money at a fast-food joint or greasy spoon and calling it a night…not so much
  • If you’re going the more inexpensive route, being thoughtful about the surroundings is mandatory and will show that your investment was in the thought behind the evening…and not just the finances it took to make it happen
  • Spending big on date number one might create a strong impression, but you’re also risking setting a standard that you might feel like you have to always live up to from that point forward
