When it comes to holidays, some people like to change the menu up from year to year at Christmas or Easter, but for most folks, Thanksgiving is always about the turkey. The bird is the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving feast on many tables across the country, but it’s often the sides that are most beloved. And a new report reveals which ones are the most popular in each state.

  • Allrecipes analyzed user data and crunched the numbers to find how the favorites differ from state to state.
  • Instead of looking at unique searches in states or focusing on local favorites, Allrecipes used total site traffic to give us an overall view of the top Thanksgiving sides.

The Most Popular Thanksgiving Side Dishes

  • Green Bean Casserole - For some people, it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without this classic casserole on the table. It’s the most popular side overall, tipping the list in 19 states: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
  • Sweet Potato Casserole - This Southern-inspired Turkey Day staple is number one in 16 states: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
  • Cornbread Dressing - There are a lot of different kinds of dressing or stuffing you can make for Thanksgiving, but Cornbread Dressing is the most popular in eight states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
  • Candied Yams - This dish is simple, it can be made with only four ingredients: mini marshmallows, sweet potatoes, brown sugar and butter, and people love it. Especially in the seven states where it’s the most popular Thanksgiving side: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
  • Corn Pudding - It may not have as many fans as some other sides, but in one state, it’s the most popular: Maryland.
