Early Monday morning, deputies from the Williamson County, Illinois, Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call from a driver whose car was malfunctioning and wouldn’t stop. Deputies quickly caught up with the runaway vehicle which was traveling at about 30 miles per hour on a highway near Carterville. The car’s brake lights indicated to deputies that the driver was trying to stop the car, but it wasn’t slowing down.
With the runaway car heading toward Crab Orchard Lake, deputies made the decision to perform a rolling roadblock to safely bring it to a stop. They passed the vehicle, positioned a patrol car in front, and gradually decelerated until the car's front bumper lightly touched the rear bumper of the patrol car. The deputy then applied the brakes to bring both vehicles to a complete stop, just a quarter of a mile from the lake.
Sheriff Jeff Diederich praised the operation, noting the deputies' quick thinking likely saved the car from driving into the lake. The pregnant driver was checked by EMS out of caution, but was fortunately uninjured. The patrol car suffered no damage and the runaway car only sustained some minor damage.
