Fire Dept Cadet Catches Tot After Fall From Three-Story Balcony

A two-year-old toddler is safe after a fall from a third-story balcony in Spring, Texas, thanks to an off-duty Houston Fire Department cadet. Last Friday, Chase Armstrong was home with her three children when a stranger, Takeya Johnson, knocked on her door. Takeya explained that her son, Zach Johnson, had just caught Chase’s two-year-old daughter, Carter, after the toddler fell from the family’s third-floor balcony.

Zach and his mom had been talking outside the building, catching up after his day at Houston Fire Department Academy, when they noticed Carter getting dangerously close to the balcony’s edge. As the toddler climbed the railing, Zach quickly positioned himself below while Takeya ran toward the stairwell. When Carter lost her balance and came tumbling down, Zach caught her, saving her life.

The emotional impact of the rescue was profound for everyone involved. Zach, proud of staying calm under pressure, says the incident has confirmed his choice of careers. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Chase has repeatedly thanked Zach and is calling him a hero. Takeya moved to tears, describes seeing her son’s first life-saving act as “unforgettable” and a moment of immense pride. Zach's actions have also earned him praise from Houston Fire Department officials, with Chief Mike Brown applauding his instinct and readiness for the job.
