A North Carolina man kicked off his shoes over a decade ago and never put them back on. Robin Greenfield says he hasn’t worn shoes since 2011 – and that includes while doing everything from hiking to grocery shopping.
The 37-year-old says he was inspired to live the shoeless life when he went on a school trip to New Zealand in 2008 and noticed the group leader going barefoot. Greenfield says the only times he ever dons a pair of kicks is in bad weather or in places that require them. But otherwise, he says, “For me, being barefoot is an opportunity to reach people at any moment, with every step that I take to break outside societal norm.”
