When it comes to moving, the seasonal sweet spot tends to be mid-May through mid-September. Especially when comes to college students as they figure out their living situations for the upcoming school year. Experienced movers know all too well that there’s a right way…and a wrong way…to do things. And getting that experience usually comes with some historical screw-ups and learning experiences along the way.

Those who don’t have multiple moves under their belts can learn from those who’ve been there before. These are a few valuable do’s and don’ts when it comes to moving…you’ll thank us later.

  • DO – Hire movers. Yes, it can get expensive, but you’ll be glad to spend the money when you’re not the one lugging all that crap in scorching summer heat
  • DON’T – Be a Mr. Helper for the movers you’ve hired. They’re pros, and they want to get the job done. You’ll be in the way. Don’t supervise. Don’t get all chatty and buddy-buddy with them. Don’t make wacky quips like, “That’s quite a workout, eh?” Set out some water. Order some pizza. Give them some beer afterwards.
  • DO – Get your internet service provider lined up ASAFP. You’ll be glad you had the foresight to get that done early.
  • DON’T – Leave large trash items out in front of the place you’re leaving with signs that read, “FREE!” You’re just being a dick and making it someone else’s problem
  • DO – It helps. A lot
  • DON’T – Be honest on your new apartment move-in check list. Be vague. It’ll give you some wiggle room on the inspection when you eventually decide to move out
  • DO – Inspect items as the movers leave, most movers will compensate you if something is damaged along the way
  • DON’T – Be afraid to take pictures…especially if the movers you’ve hired are drinking the beer you provided on the job. It will make getting reimbursed for broken crap so much easier
