A pair of twin sisters recently enjoyed a reunion 81 years in the making, thanks to a DNA test. Maurilia Chavez and Andrea Lopez had been separated from each other since they were five when their parents died and all 10 of the siblings were split up between family members. But a genetic test led them back to each other and within days, they were finally face-to-face at age 90.
After the test matched them around Thanksgiving, Lopez booked a flight from her home in Las Vegas to Denver to see her long-lost sister. The twins say that getting together again actually felt like they were meeting for the first time. “It was like the first time I saw her in my life because 81 years is too long,” Lopez shares, adding, “I remember just a little bit, a little, little bit.”
The last time they saw each other was at age nine when all of their siblings were brought together for one day. Now these twins are making up for lost time and they’ve also discovered that three of their siblings are still alive and they’re making plans to spend time together with them as well. Chavez sums it up best by saying, “I am the happiest person in the world because I never thought I was going to see her again.”
